CYNDI JONES

When you feel moved to do something,

it isn’t necessarily logical.

Many years ago, while coping with the death of my first husband, I realized how important a role that summer camp played in our family’s life.  As a safe and fun summer environment, camp provided my children with great memories and friendships, while giving me peace of mind and time to put my life back together.  With the support of a circle of caring friends, I later felt inspired to launch a project helping others who had recently lost loved ones.  My vision was a foundation that would give a voice to families in crisis, by funding summer camp opportunities for children who have lost a parent.  My plan went on the back shelf until I found myself planning for marriage to the man who is now my husband.   We decided that rather than accepting traditional wedding gifts, we would prefer to seek donations to our newly founded Wildflower Camp Foundation.

While the Foundation has been a significant undertaking, it has been both exciting and gratifying.  In the first summer of its existence, the Foundation awarded a handful of camp scholarships to children who had recently lost a parent; this year, sixteen children will be able to attend camp.

On Legacy

As I’ve witnessed the Foundation’s impact on children in need of a supportive environment and meaningful friendships, I’ve become aware of the lasting and growing effects the Foundation will have.  I have now begun to think of the Wildflower Camp Foundation as part of my own personal legacy.  My children are also involved, serving on the Foundation’s Board of Directors and learning first-hand the importance of giving back to children in need.

Advice

1.  Follow your heart.  If you really want to do “a legacy project”, make it happen, whatever the obstacles may be.

2.  Respect what’s meaningful to you. Whatever size or shape your project takes on, make sure it fits your own goals and values.
